CULTURAL BAGGAGE #22 – RIP JLC

Jean-Luc Godard

I couldn’t let the death of Jean-Luc Godard be completely obscured by the other big news of the moment.

I love JLG movies. He was a bloody minded auteur who packed big (and sometimes daft) ideas into everything he made.  His movies can be dense, annoying, difficult or even unwatchable, I’ve fallen asleep in many – but they never fail to be surprising, deeply inspiring and a little bit life changing.

…and talking of bloody minded auteurs – my friend Toby Amies spent the last 5 years making ‘the’ documentary about King Crimson. I’ve seen it and it is brilliant and strangely moving. A must-see even if you find King Crimson to be intolerable fiddle faddle (understandable). There will be a small cinema release very soon, so keep an eye out.
